Helping Your Steel Structure Survive the Snow

Snow is a rare reality in the Lower Mainland, but when it hits – chaos tends to follow. But Absolute Fabrication would like to help you prevent chaos as it pertains to your steel structure, by explaining how you can protect your steel structure from cold, wet and snowy conditions!

The Durability of Steel

Firstly, we feel the need to tell you that steel offers amazing durability – no matter the weather.

Steel is a long-lasting product that is resistant to rust and wear, and is fire-proof too. It offers you a very long shelf-life, whether you have a place of business constructed out of metal or an indoor business solution, and is a great option as a building material!

That being said, there are also factors that can work against steel, thus – preparing your steel structure for snow has more to do with what’s around it, over concerns with your actual building.  Which we explain in these ‘3 Exterior Factors that Hinder Steel in the Snow’.

1. Trees or bushes are one concern you might have around your steel structure, and should be pruned back to keep them from scrapping along your steel panels during strong winter storms – which we have had a few of already this winter.

Heavy snow and ice on overhanging trees can also cause them to break and fall onto your steel structure, which could cause a lot of damage as well, so having such things pruned for safety measures is always wise.

2. Debris is another concern you need to be cautious of piling up on your steel roof. From leaves and twigs to pine needles and dirt – these things hold moisture concerns and can lead to rusting your screws and other corrosive metal.

Also, don’t forget about the debris in your gutters. As with the concern above, rain and ice building up overhead can least to rust and structural concerns, so ensuring your gutters are draining properly is important.

3. Seals don’t always say sealed, so check your seals for any signs of cracking or leaking around the edges of your building, on the roof, around skylights, windows and vents. This will keep your structure in healthy shape and avoid mishaps from occurring. And if needed, reinforce your steel structure with waterproof sealant, and keep it safe and sound all season long.
